TLC - Unpretty

Unpretty Rapstar라는 음악프로가 인기를 끌고 있다..아마도 

얼굴을 보지 않고 랩실력으로 승부를 보겠다는 의미를 담고 

있는 듯하다. 그래서 유난히 이 프로에서는 가사나 표정, 그 

행동에서도 다른 프로에서 볼 수 있는 가식적인 아름다움을 

표현하려고 하지 않는 것같다.. 

하지만 아마도 그 점이 또 하나의 공식이 되어가고, 또 하나

의 가식이 되어가고 있는 듯하다.

Unpretty라는 단어는 이쁘지 않다라는 의미이다.. 하지만 이 

노래 이후 그 뜻이 확장되었다고 한다.. 사실은 이쁘지만 다

른 사람이 아름답지 않다고 말함으로 인해 안 이쁘다고 느끼

는 것.. 

즉 본질적인 아름다음이 사람들의 관념이나 선입관으로 인해

가려 버린 것을 의미한다.. 쉽게 말하자면 자신이 느끼지 못하

는 아름다움을 아름다움인지 모르는 사람은 아름다움을 절대 

알지 못한다는 의미이며 그로 인해 아름다운 존재까지도 자신

의 아름다움을 의심하고 아름답지 않다고 생각하게 된다는 것

이다. 더 어려운가?

우리는 가끔 세계미인대회를 보다보면 각국의 미인을 보며 

' 아니 어떻게 저런 사람이 미인이라고 참가한거지? ' 라고 느

끼는  경우가 있다. 그건 아마도 각국의 미의 기준이 묘하게 

다른 경우일 수도 있다. 최근 들어서 점점 전세계적으로 미인

대회에서 미인을 선발하는 미의 기준이 획일화되어가고 있는 

것을 느끼게 되곤 하는데 미인대회라는 것이 세상 사람들에게 

미인에 대한 고정된 틀을 점점 제공하는 것은 아닐까라는 생

각을 하게 된다.

그런 생각 때문일까..가끔은 전통적인 백인미녀가 아닌 의식적

으로 흑인, 혹은 히스페닉 혹은 아리안.. 가끔 아시안 미녀에게 

우승을 안기곤 한다...하지만 그 몇 명의 심사의원이 세상의 미

를 다 아는 사람들일까?

수학에서 '아름담다'라는 개념은 참 거짓을 만들수 없는 개념

이다. 

그 의미는 무엇이 아름답다라고 정할 기준이 생길 수 없다는 

이야기일 수 있다는 이야기이고. 어떤 한 사람의 생각 혹은 모

임의 사람들이 서로 합의한 , 혹은 공유하는 개념에 불과할지 

모른다는 생각에 이를 수 있다.

미운 오리새끼에 나오는 백조의 알에서 나온 미운오리는 오리

들 사이에서 말 그대로  Unpretty 한 존재였다. 하지만 실상은 

우아한  백조였었다라는 사실을 생각해보면  오리들이 바라보

는 미의 개념과 백조가 바라보는 미의 개념이 다름을 알 수 있

다. 그리고 그 동화를 바라보는 사람의 시각은 다시 한 번 두 

동물을 비교해 서 오리보다 백조가 더 이쁘다는 생각으로 정해 

버린다. 오리가 더 이쁘다고 생각하는 소수의 사람도 존재할 수 

있는데 말이다.

하지만 이 모든 것이 다 편견일 수 있다. 모든 존재는 다 각자의 

방식으로 아름다움을 내포한 존재들이니까. 그런데 누가 끊임

없이 변화하는 아름답다는 개념을 만들어 내고 있는 걸까? 많이 

궁금하다..
