Lauryn Hill - Doo-Wop (That Thing) (1998)

그룹 The Fugees 에서 독립하여  Lauryn Hill 이 처음으로 발표했던 싱글 

놀랍게도 Billboard Hot 100 에 1위로 데뷰하였다.. 빌보드  역사상 10번 째

였다고  . rapper의 음악이 1위를 한 것도 처음이고 당연히 여자 랩퍼가 1위

를 한것도 처음이고.. 아직도 여자래퍼로 1위는 유일하다고 . 게다가 다음 해

2개의 그래미도 득템.  놀라운 것은 그녀는 노래도 되고 랩도 되는 드문 아티

스트였다. 작곡 프로듀스까지 ... 분명 못하는 것도 있었을 것이다.. 

Lauryn Hill 은 이 곡으로 역사적인 빌보드 데뷔 1위를 달성했지만 그 후로 

더이상 그녀의 히트 곡을 우리는 만나지 못하고 있다. 그 뜻은 그녀  역시 

이 곡이 그녀의 이름으로된 유일한 원힛 원더가 되고 말았다는 것이다  

이유가 어찌되었든 그녀는 무대에서 사라졌다.. 능력이 있다고 여겨지는 아

티스트가 씬에서 쑥 사라진다면 볼것도 없이 전통적인 이유들 중 하나가 있

을 것이다... 그리고 우린 그 이유를 믿을까 말까만 결정하면 된다.. 대부분 

믿지 못하겠지만 그냥 귀찮아서 그렇다고 믿어 버린다..

이 곡은 Doo Wop 이란  제목을 갖고 있지만 Doo Wop 장르의 곡은 아니다, 

붕어빵에 붕어 안들었다고 화내는 사람 없듯이 이 곡은 들으면 알지만 전통

적인 HIp Hop 장르 이고  R&B,  Soul 음악이다.. 그럼 Doo Wop은 이 곡에

서 무슨 뜻으로 쓰였을까.. 먼저 그 뜻을 생각하지 않고 그냥 생각해보자면

그냥 사람에게  손해나 손실을 가져오는 것이거나 결국 아무 의미가 없는 것

이야 맞을 듯하다..

인트로에서 이렇게 표현하는 곳에 Doo Wop과 같은 의미로 쓰인 That Thing

이 나오고 있으니까.

좋은 것이 연상되지 않는다.. 인생에 있어 우리는 망치는 요소들은 많다. 도

박, 마약, 지나친 음주, 지나친 사랑, 집착 , 그리고 지나친 돈욕심.. 모든 것

이 그 신기루같은 것들일 수 있다. 그렇게 보면 대충 감이 올 것이다. 이제 

Doo Wop으로 돌아가 보면 그런 의미로도 쓰이는 슬랭이다. 일단 마약이라는 

의미로도 쓰이고, XEX라는 의미로도 쓰이기도 한다.. 그래서 이 문장은 어떤 

놈은 니 인생에 도움이 안되는 마약같은, 쓰레기같은, 하루밤 스치는 사랑같은 

거야 라는 다중적 의미를 가진 문장이 될 수 있다.. 우리 나라 말로도 표현가능

하다.. "그놈 진짜 거시기한 놈이야 "  라고.. 

M/V  에서 그녀는 한쪽은 1960년 대 풍의 옷을 입고 한쪽은 1999년 복장으

로 나오고 있다.. 그러고 보니 한때 정말 좋아했던 아티스트였는데..

The 5th Dimension  together Let's Find Love (1971)에서 비트를 

샘플링하였다고 한다
