Levi's 광고 프로젝트 " Take The First Step "  

5명의 당찬 신인들과 그래미상에 빛나는 엘리샤 키를 함께 묶어

시리즈 광고를 하고 있다. 세상은 늘 정상에 있는 사람들과 새롭

게 도전하는 사람들로 가득차 있다. Music분야도 마찬가지, 물론

이 5명보다 더 당찬 뮤지션들이 이 세상에 많을 것이다. 그냥 이

들은 그냥 리바이스가 고른 사람들이겠지. 마케팅에 어울리는 사

람으로 하지만 심각하게 생각하지 말자. 그냥 우린 새로운 뮤지션

을 만날 수 있으니까 말이다. 우리가 메인스트림말고 인디뮤지션

구경하기 쉬운가 말이다. 진짜 광팬들 아니면 말이다. 

5명의 당찬 뮤지션들이 보다 나은 음악을 위해 자신의 첫 스텝을 

내딛는다는 광고 . 배경 음악으로는 각각 자신들의 노래를 사용

한다.

사실 오랫동안 입어 멋지게 헤어져 버린 청바지 같은 음악이란 건

아무리 같은 공장에서 나온 물건이지만 입는 사람과 오랜시간 함

께하며 개인적이고 맞춤 옷같은 느낌을 주는 청바지처럼 편안하고 

서로 공감할 수 있는 음악을 말하는 것일 것이다. 

세상에 아무리 무한반복되는 기계음을 복사한 음악들이 여름을 

점령하고 있다고 하더라도 사실 우리 마음 속에는 머리를 통비워

줄 음악보단 세상을 살며 점점 비어가는 내 가슴을 채워 줄 음악이

필요한지도 모른다. 물론 이들 5명의 음악이 우리 가슴을 채워줄지

는 장담 못한다. 왜냐고 이 다섯명이 이 세상 사람들 모든 사람을 

팬으로 만들만큼 세련되었다고는 생각하진 않는다. 다만  새로운  

음악은 새로운 사람을 만나는 느낌을 선사한다. 그 작곡한 사람 

작사한 사람을 어떤 새로운 음악을 통해 만난다는 것은 갑자기 우

연히 길에 가다 멈춰 서 있다가 내 주파수를 잠시나마 흔들어 놓을 

만한 사람의 목소리나 그 사람의 최근 심정을 스쳐 엿듣는 것과 다

름이 없다. 싫던 좋던 말이다. 그냥 그렇게 스쳐 들으면 된다.   

음악과 청바지가 무슨 관계가 있을까? 아무 관련이 없을지 모른다.

이 사람들  청바지 회사에서 돈주니까 그냥 광고에서 " I'm livin in

Levi's " 라고 말하겠고,  우리가 이미 쇄뇌당했을지도 모르지만

인생에서 청바지입고 다니는 순간이 가장 편안한 때 아니었나?

음악도 그럴꺼라 생각된다. 댄디한 슈트나 팬시한 옷보다 그냥 대

충 골반에 걸려있는 듯한 루즈한 청바지를 입고 연주하는 음악이 

더 편하게 느껴진다. 듣는 사람이나 연주하는 사람이나 말이다.

엘리샤 키가 이야기한다.. "청바지는 음악처럼 모든 인종을 뛰어넘고

장벽을 허문다." 고 말한다. " 수 많은 인종 , 종교 백그라운드 하나

같이 다른 것 투성이지만 음악은 그 모든 장벽을 허문다 마찬가지로

리바이스도 같은 것을 한다 .."

어느 순간이든 자신을 돌아본다는 건 사람들이 매일 혹은 매 순간 해야 

할 일이지만 그러기란 너무나 힘들다. 항상 우린 자신을 돌아보기보단

남을 보고 평가하기에 바쁜 존재들이니까 말이다. 바쁜 사람일 수록 더

그렇다. 내 약점을 감추기 위해서라도 남의 약점을 먼저 보려고 노력한

다. 

Kurt vile의 노래는 간단하고 십게 자기 자신을 바라본다. 깊게 들어가지

않아도 그의 존재감을 그 표면에 다 담아낸다.

마치 예전 포크음악을 하던 들국화같은 느낌이랄까. 자기 자신을 3인칭

처럼 표현하고 아무런 감정도 갖지 않고 관조하고 있다. 그냥 자신에 대

한 불만을 3자에게 쏟아 붙는 우리 인생처럼 자기자신에게 불만을 토해

내기도 한다. 

가슴을 울리지도 머리를 자극하지도 않으면서 짠한 감정을 불러 일으키

는 느낌..

어린 시절엔 머리를 채우거나 머리에 자극이 가는 것을 찾고

나이들면 마음을 채우거나 마음에 자극을 주는 것을 찾는다.

물론 단서가 붙어야 한다. 꼭 그런 것은 아니지만. 

모든 학문이나 인생사는 수없는 컨디션이 붙고 그 컨디션을 

이겨냈거나 혹은 요행이거나  현재의 위치에 다다르게 된다. 

일차적으론  항상 낮에는 결심하고 밤이면 술 마시고 바닦을

기어다니는 여성이 보인다. 결심은 술 안마시겠다거나 ....

2차적으론  자신이 싸우고 있는 적이 너무 커서 이길수 없다

는 공포감에 지배당한 상태라고 할까 . 원인은 술먹는 자신의 

습관도 아니고 미래에 대한 공포도  외로움도 아니다. 본인도 

자신의 공포가 무엇인지 몰라서 쓰지 않았거나 알면서도 외면

하는 것일 수도 있다. 하지만 분명한 것은 술로는 이길 수 없는 

상대일 거란 꺼다. 그래서 그녀는 자신의 약속을 계속 깰 수 밖
에 없을 것이다. 안타깝지만 그냥 스스로 약속을 하지 않아서

그 약속을 깨는 것에 대한 죄책감을 갖는 것부터 벗어나기 위해 

스스로 다짐이나 약속을 하지 않는 것이 첫 출발이 될 것 같고 

다음엔 당당히 그 공포를 마주봐야 한다. 그냥 만약 죽었으면 좋

겠다고 기도할 시간에 직접 공포에 짖눌려 죽는 편이 더 빠르거

나 운이 좋으면 이기는 방법도 나올 지도 모른다.

Ibeyi  아프리카 나이지리아 요루바어로 " 쌍둥이 " 뜻 발음은 " 이베이 "

실제 이 듀오가 쌍둥이다. French-Cuban이라고 나오는데 보통 국적이

뒤에 나오는 걸로 보면 쿠바국적인 것같음.. 하지만 현재 프랑스에 거주하

고 있다. 아버지는 쿠바에서 아직도 유명한 퍼거션니스트로 활동중이라고 

하며 이 듀오는 휴일이면 쿠바를 방문한다고 한다. 

River 는 아프리카적으로 보면 주술적일 수도 있고  혹은 쿠바의 주 종교인

카톨릭으로 본다면 침례에 해당하는 내용을 다르고 있다.

침례는 물에 잠기는 것은 죽음을 의미한다. 불사조가 불에 들어가 타죽고 

다시 탄생하듯.. 우리의 영혼은 물에 들어가 죽고 새롭게 탄생한다는 행동으

로 표현하는 메타포라 할 수 있다. You 가 되는 대상이 누구인지 불명확하

지만  신( 기독교에선 하나님 or God, YWHW )일 수도 있고 그들이 모든

것을 털어내고 다시 태어나게 할 능력이 있는  다른 존재일 수 있다. 명확하

게 가사 속에 말을 하지 않았음으로 추측이상의 단언은 할 수 없다. 

이들의 음악엔 원래 아프리카 조상의 리듬과 악기, 스페인의 지배를 받았던 

쿠바의 라틴리듬 그리고 그들이 실제 거주하는 프랑스의 것들이 결합하여

독특한 칼라를 만들어 낸다.
